Opening Event: Elie Coutts + Cameron Morgan

Join us to celebrate the opening of Critters Creepers Crawlers, Sprouting Solitary Soarers — the second of two collaborative exhibitions by artists Elie Coutts + Cameron Morgan.

Hot on the heels of their first instalment at Project Ability in Glasgow, Gaada is excited to unveil the collaborative textiles work of Shetland based artist Elie Coutts and Glaswegian artist, Cameron Morgan for the first time in Shetland.

On Saturday 30th of April from 10am - 12pm Gaada will open its doors for a special exhibition viewing inside the Burra Isle workshop, complimenting a smaller art offering in the outdoor exhibition space, Display.

This collaborative project has developed over the past year, when Gaada teamed up with Glasgow based arts organisation, Project Ability. Textiles are a recurring thread of interest for both Elie and Cameron, and after a period of conversations and workshares, this vibrant and playful body of work emerged.

Cameron’s colourful work echoes the bright lights and city critters of central belt cities with expressive embroidered stitches. These are presented in circular mounts which give a subtle nod to the Jarl shields of Shetland’s Viking history.

Conversely Elie’s work utilises an earthier, subdued palette and provides an exploration of time in natures affects the human psyche. She focused on species of plant and animal encountered on her winter walks around Lerwick, the ubiquitous herring gulls and weeds, that are often overlooked or undervalued. Reimagining these scenes conveys the increased connection she felt within her natural environment during lockdown.
