Happy Summer fae Gaada

The sun is shining in Shetland, and Gaada is taking a short break from 3rd - 19th July to enjoy the summer light. Although the workshop may be closed, you can still visit our current exhibition of comic-based research by Esther McManus, which is open 24/7 in our outdoor exhibition space, Display.

Before we head off though, we wanted to take a wee look back on the past term and celebrate all the incredible work and projects that have been happening in the workshop recently.

Artist One-to-One’s and new editions
Our weekly Artist One-to-One sessions have been continuing both from inside the Gaada workshop and out and about in Shetland too, including alternative making spaces such as Polycrub art sessions with Artist Mari Johnson. Gaada's artists have been progressing and developing their practices using risograph, drawing, screenprint, painting, sound foraging, etching and form making.

Much of the work made during these sessions is experimental and developmental but some of our artists have also enjoyed releasing editions into our online shop in the form of badges by Struan Haswell and riso prints by Joyce Davies.

Exhibitions in Display
Over this Spring / Summer term we've had two incredible exhibitions in Display. In May, Struan Haswell opened his exhibition I will not give up on a list of things I like to stay the same without ending which explored themes of camouflage occurring both in the human and natural world.

This was swiftly followed by an exhibition by Esther McManus, presenting an extract from Time in the Archive, Esther’s contribution to We Axe For What We Want, a publication which foregrounds the multiple voices and collaborations of Gaada’s 2020/21 programme Weemin’s Wark. If you're in Shetland, you can catch Esther's exhibition until 25th July and if you're further afield you can purchase the prints on show here and have your own home exhibition!

Workshop Bursaries
We've had a busy time continuing our Workshop Bursaries which enable Shetland based artists to access specialist facilities and one-to-one support to explore new ideas and new ways of making at Gaada. Jennifer McLeaskintosh has been developing a series of riso prints based on their sketchbooks, Shannon Leslie produced a range of beautiful prints based on her quick sketches and labour-intensive fish drawings, Bryan Mouat has been merging virtual and actual landscapes in riso, and Filip Andel has been experimenting with Gaada's hot foil press. Projects
Gaada has been collaborating with 86 young artist who attend Hamnavoe Primary School on an exciting new project that we are really looking forward to unveiling in the new school term...keep an eye on our social media!

In other news, Gaada turned 3 this year and we are looking to the future as we continue to grow and develop. We cannot wait to get back and share with you some of the VERY exciting projects we have coming up! 🤐

Until then, stay safe,

the Gaada team
