Rosalie Schweiker artist residency

Over the past week, Gaada has had the pleasure of hosting Rosalie Schweiker as artist in residence at our Toogs Workshop, in Burra.

Rosalie is an artist, grower, organiser, and designer, who co-facilitates independent spaces for teaching and learning, such as seasonal art schools for South London’s Rabbits Road Press and the Graphics department at Camberwell, UAL.

Visual note-taking during Peer Group Pot Luck

Throughout the week Rosalie has been a friendly whirlwind of inspiring energy in the workshop, where she has explored (nearly all of) the facilities Toogs’ has to offer - including publications, etchings, laser engraved protest stamps, badges as well as visual note-taking for a few Gaada gatherings - including the first Peer Group Pot Luck lunch which took place last Sunday and was a great success!

Rosalie has had use of the workshop facilities in exchange for supporting a publication-idea-generating workshop with #ShetlandCrew, a group of care-experienced young people who have accessed Who Cares? Shetland.

Over the years, Rosalie’s spirit and practice has had a tremendously positive impact on Gaada, including contributing toward the initial courage to get the organisation going! (On recent reflection it seems entirely possible that Rosalie’s self-described “potato-phase” subconsciously influenced the early adoption of a humble, holey Shetland tottie as our logo!) Since then we have stayed in touch, and continued to follow her work with interest - many of Rosalie’s publications now form part of the Island Zine Library.

As Rosalie begins her journey back to London, she leaves behind her a workshop full of art workers buzzing with excitement to share the new workshop facilities with the Shetland public when we relaunch in May! We hope that she will come back soon!

The residency has been part of gaada’s 2022/23 visual art programme, no artist is an island and was supported by Arts Council England’s DYCP (Develop Your Creative Practice) and creative scotland.
