Safe Haven Mural Commission

We are excited to announce a new commission from Hamnavoe Primary School and Gaada. This autumn, we will be working with artist Jono Sandilands to create a welcome mural at the school.

The colourful mural will sit on a large (currently blank concrete) wall, and it will be the first thing visitors see when they enter the school grounds. The mural will feature the school’s motto (and Hamnavoe meaning) ‘Safe Haven’, as well as illustrations inspired by the bairns at the school and the local community.

We first got to know Jono and his work through Peer Group, and when this opportunity came up, we knew he would be perfect for the commission. Jono describes himself as a ‘graphic adventurer’ and has a background in printmaking, technology, design and illustration. If you’d like to learn more about Jono’s practice, we highly recommend having a play and wander through his website.

We are currently fundraising to pay for this projects materials. You can help this by purchasing a Hamnavoe Primary School x Gaada Tea Towel via our online shop. Support an art project and brighten up your dish washing and your life, what’s not to like?!

We can’t wait to share more as this project develops. We are delighted to continue our work with the Hamnavoe School and to begin our work with the skilled and imaginative Jono Sandilands!

Funds for Jono’s commission were raised by the Hamnavoe School and Gaada’s contibutions to the project are funded by Creative Scotland. This includes a mentorship programme for the commissioned artist to work with an experienced mural artist to assist with the practicalities of creating a project like this.
